  • Public Drinking Fountain, Howell, Michigan 1912

    Public fountain in front of the Rexall Drug Store located in front of the Greenaway Building at 102 E. Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan, the north east corner of Grand River Avenue and Michigan Avenue, known locally as the Main Four.
    The fountain had four attached cups and was located next to a hitching post.
    Photo is facing south west, and shows buildings on the south side of Grand River Avenue. Pedestrians and vehicles are pictured.

    This summer image, taken around 1912 by Roy Newcomb, provides a view of John Hamilton with a ladle in his hand as he dips for a refreshing cup of water from the public fountain.

    The photograph appears to have been from the 1940's-1950's.  In 1952, 209 was Cozy Restaurant, 211 was Dairy Lunch, 213 was Udo's Bar, and 215 was Citzen's Mutual Printing Department.

    The date of the photograph is unknown.
