  • New Police Car for the Howell, Michigan Police Department - 1951

    In 1951 the Howell, Michigan Police Department received a new Nash Ambassodor.

    The police department was located at 121 N. Michigan Ave., southeast corner intersection of N. Michigan Ave. and Clinton St.

    Photos are used in Images of America Howell by David D. Finney Jr. and Judith McIntosh, text on page 59: "Nash Ambassador Super. In the winter of 1951, police chief Fred K. Cronenwett received the keys to a new Nash Ambassador Super patrol car. The Nash Ambassador Airflytes were considered the "cars of the future." Its distinctive and futuristic styling had a new vertical-bar grill, enclosed wheels, guardrail front bumpers, sloping fastback, and one-piece windshield."

    This photograph is of the intersection of North Court Street and East Grand River Avenue, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In view is the are the storefronts of the 300 blockof East Grand River Avenue, including Howell Auto Parts, and the Howell Theater.   This portion of North Court Street was later closed for the construction of the Amphitheater.

    In 1983, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce applied for a R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team) study, an American Institute of Architects program that brought a team of professionals to the city for a four-day period to study Howell's downtown, its ability to compete for regional shopping, and to make recommendations for improvements to re-vitalize the city.  The team, in 1984, during the study took photographs, interviewed people, held forums, and in the end provided an outline of strategies.

    This photograph is of the R/UDAT Walking Tour, Howell, Michigan, and was taken as part of documentation for the R/UDAT Study, 1984.  In view is the Michigan Avenue Bridge, and looking south, the intersection of North Michigan Avenue and Clinton Street.   The names of the persons in the photograph are unknown; The McPherson State Bank building and sign  are also in partial view.
